We've done a lot of work with Freedom Surf Shop, but this was the job that began it all. A new surf shop, one that had more of a classic and soulful approach to the surf industry, was in need of a strong brand to start out on the right foot. The clients knew the logo would include a surfer in a 'soul arch' pose, but the rest was up to us. We chose red and black for the color scheme, as it is the color of 90% of the classic surf logos from the 1960s, a period the shop's approach to the business would recall. In order to avoid the endless rebranding and logo updates that occur in any industry that is trying to keep up with fashion, we decided to create a logo that could be broken down into seperate elements that could stand alone or which could be used in any combination to give the brand many faces within a cohesive identity. Throw it all together and you have the Freedom Surf logo, easily one of the most recognizable surf brands in Virginia Beach despite the companies young age.
